Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level extension is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to order john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained online.
